I’ve decided to start a moodboard series featuring some of my favorite artists, art styles, and just general thoughts or ideas that I’m really into at the moment. To kick off the ongoing series, and in celebration of October, I’ve decided to feature Tim Burton. Burton has become a ‘cult classic’ type of movie maker over the decades and is well known for his eccentric, moody, and gothic-inspired designs.
His work inspires me as I love German Expressionism, surrealism, and film noir. I also enjoy his artwork because its always so different than whatever else is being released at the time. His artwork stays true to himself and never fails to stand out. Burton has always had a unique way of not only creating boundary-pushing, eccentric visuals, but this style of creation also showcases itself in his actual storytelling (as seen in some of his earliest films and drawings.) His storytelling often centers around the paradox of chaos and order and the tension between the two. How do they coexist? Can they? This internal tension is often something that people deal with, but may try to avoid because it’s uncomfortable – this seems to be where Burton thrives.
I’ve included below a few favorite snippets of Burton’s work that I enjoy – from the movies of his I tend to watch the most.
